In November 2020, the parishioners and neighbors of Annunciation Church in West Harlem were invited to participate in a collaborative project between myself and my peers from Brooklyn College. Our primary motivation was to give community members a tangible way to express their inner sentiments of this past year in a space that can be viewed and appreciated by the people who make up this community. With a variety of colors and paints, participants were given the opportunity to channel these moments into a simple paint stroke followed by a written reflection on what these experiences have meant to them.
This corner of the courtyard has been transformed into a sanctuary, a space of revelation where the beauty of this community's interior life comes to light.
