Meet Carolyn, who waited patiently to have her portrait drawn during LAMP Café last week. I never know where a conversation will go while drawing with someone- sometimes it’s mostly silence, other times brief small talk or various comments come up, and other times I find myself listening almost the entire time. From the moment Carolyn sat down across from me, beaming with her big smile and energy, I knew that I would have a lot to listen to! Carolyn shared with me about her time serving in the military, her mother’s passing, and how she desires people to be united more than anything right now.
I wouldn’t trade encounters like this for anything: meeting our friends at LAMP Café, getting to know them through conversation that comes up during drawing sessions, seeing someone’s face light up as they see themselves in a portrait for the first time...it is all a gift.
Thank you LAMP Catholic Ministries for encouraging me in using my artistic gifts in service with the poor.
